Engagement models define how the client and the vendor work together, who owns daily decision-making, and how responsibilities, communication, and delivery workflows are structured. A well-chosen model creates clarity, reduces operational friction, and ensures that both sides understand how delivery is managed.

Common engagement models include:

Staff augmentation
The client manages engineers directly as if they were internal team members. The vendor handles sourcing, HR support, contracts, payroll, and compliance. This model works best when the client already has a strong internal engineering structure and needs additional capacity.

Dedicated team model
The client provides product direction and prioritization, while the vendor takes on operational oversight. Delivery Managers supervise day-to-day organization, communication flow, performance, and efficiency within the dedicated team. This model reduces the client’s management load while still keeping direction in their hands.

Vendor managed team
The vendor manages daily delivery, workflows, team performance, and collaboration. The client sets goals, provides high-level requirements, and receives progress updates. This model is suitable when the client wants outcomes but prefers not to manage individual engineers.

Hybrid model
Responsibilities are shared. For example, the client may lead product and roadmap ownership, while the vendor manages delivery execution through PMs or Delivery Managers. Hybrid setups are common when teams scale or when both sides want balanced ownership.

Models differ in several dimensions:

  • responsibility for performance management

  • level of client involvement in interviews and selection
  • contract structure, such as per engineer, per team, or per outcome
